About Monica Abarca
At an early age, I had an interest in the Martial Arts. With my brother we started to learn Tae Kwon Do, loved watching the Bruce Lee films and old Chinese films But that didn’t last too long, as my interest expanded to other sports, dance and music.
In my late teens, was interested in philosophy, metaphysics, and spirituality. Around 1994 was introduced to Tai Chi for a short period did not get the message back then. The road took me to travel overseas, and also learn more regarding spirituality, and flow of energy. Part of my interest has been how emotional situations & energy blockages cause illnesses and in researching more in this area, life threw certain challenges my way. In 2003, playing soccer as a goal keeper, I hurt my lower back and became fearful of causing more damage. By 2006 I had a minor accident at home; I had damaged my lower back again, and due to this had to go through physiotherapy learning to walk again. Lucky for me it took me less than three months to recover, but never fully, as the fear was still there. After coming back from overseas at the end of September 2008, Master Alex Galvan had started to teach Tai Chi in Fairfield. Master Alex invited me to his new Tai Chi school in Fairfield. So by October 2008 I restarted to learn Tai Chi. This time around my experience was so different. Feeling the flow of energy, feeling the reaction my body had with the 24 Traditional Yang style Form. For me, to learn the 24 Form, Shi Ba Shi (18 Healing Movements), 32 Yang Style Tai Chi Sword, Swimming Dragon Qigong and the Dragon Fan Tai Chi movement within a year of restarting has been a beautiful experience learning about the internal energy exercises. My fear of hurting my back has been reduced dramatically. In November 2009, my car was written off, and as it was whilst going to work, had to go through physiotherapy. This time around, I continued to go to my weekly Tai Chi classes and my recovery was very rapid, as so the physiotherapist advises. I realised I no longer had this fear.
In February 2010, I accomplished Level 1 teaching; this has been a definite challenge as at present I assist in teaching on the Wednesday classes in Fairfield. Thanks to Sydney Vision Tai Chi Qigong Health & Harmony Centre and with Master Alex Galvan as my teacher, I know that I am overcoming my fears and have an increasing hunger of improving my skills so to benefit all students. I’m ready to start my own class soon.
